Environmental Officer

Southern Launch Full Time

Job Description

About the company

Southern Launch offers bespoke space mission services from two complementary spaceports in Australia. Its vertically integrated processes for orbital and suborbital launch, hypersonic flight, re-entries from space, and range services for advanced system testing have been proven by customers and regulators.

About the role

The Environmental Officer will lead environmental stewardship across our operations. More than compliance, this is a hands-on role monitoring sensitive environments, meeting strict regulations, and embedding sustainability into everyday practice. The role will help balance the drive for space exploration with protecting our ranges for generations to come. Responsibilities include:

  • Safeguard biodiversity and habitat across spaceports, ranges, and offset lands, ensuring sustainability alongside operations.
  • Lead habitat regeneration and rehabilitation programs, restoring disturbed areas and enhancing offsets to meet ecological goals.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, approvals, and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate monitoring of flora, fauna, noise, dust, light, erosion, and rehabilitation, delivering timely reports and maintaining auditable records.
  • Conduct inspections and field monitoring to identify risks early and implement controls for biosecurity, pests, erosion, fire, and regeneration.
  • Manage GIS and spatial datasets to track land use, offsets, and obligations.
  • Build environmental awareness across the workforce through inductions, briefings, and toolbox talks.
  • Engage with regulators, First Nations people, community stakeholders, and technical experts to uphold commitments.
  • Promote continuous improvement, embedding sustainability and habitat protection into mission success.

About you

We are proud of the diversity of experience within our team and will be encouraged by what you can bring to this position. We are initially looking for:

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field.
  • Experience in environmental compliance, land management, and habitat restoration.
  • Knowledge of Australian environmental laws and offset management.
  • Skilled in field monitoring, inspections, and contractor management.
  • Strong communication and regulatory reporting skills.

This position requires you to hold and maintain a valid Australian Defence Security Clearance.
